The first three columns are the ENERGY STAR sizing chart, linked in the sources below. The last column is ours: blade tips need 18 in of clearance to the nearest wall, so the shortest wall must be the span plus 36 in. ENERGY STAR's chart stops at 400 sq ft — above that, two smaller fans placed along the room beat one oversized one, and we will not invent a band that no standard publishes.

How this was worked out

Blade span comes from floor area, and the chart is not ours. The bands above are published by ENERGY STAR. We have reproduced them rather than derived them, because a fan's airflow depends on motor and blade pitch as well as diameter, and the certification program has the test data. Where the chart stops, so do we.

The room shape can overrule the chart. ENERGY STAR also asks for 18 in between the blade tips and the nearest wall. That makes the widest fan a room can take shortest wall in inches − 36. A 10 × 22 ft room is 220 sq ft and the chart says 44 in; the 10 ft wall allows 120 − 36 = 84 in, so the chart wins. A 7 × 30 ft room is also over 200 sq ft but its short wall allows only 48 in. Long narrow rooms are sized by the short wall every time.

Downrod length cannot be a single number, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. Hunter's own formula is ceiling height − fan height − desired hanging height = downrod length, and the fan height is the part that varies: Hunter puts most housings between 8 and 12 inches, and it is printed in the manual and on the box. Enter your fan's housing height and this gives you one answer; leave it blank and it gives you the range that 8 to 12 inches produces. Confirm against the fan you actually buy before ordering a rod.

Hanging height. ENERGY STAR asks for blades at least 7 ft above the floor, and 8 to 9 ft where the ceiling allows, because that is where a fan moves air best. This calculator targets 8 ft and tells you the height it lands on, so you can check it yourself. An 8 ft ceiling leaves no room for a downrod at all — that is what flush or hugger mounts are for, and ENERGY STAR notes they move less air than a fan on a rod.

Sloped ceilings. Hunter's guidance is specific: a slope under 32 degrees works with the bracket in the box, and only above 32 degrees do you need an angled mount adapter. A slope also needs a longer downrod so the blades clear the pitch, and the ceiling height to measure is the height at the point the fan will hang, not at the tallest part of the room.

Common questions

What size ceiling fan for a 12x12 room?

144 sq ft sits at the top of the ENERGY STAR 76–144 band, so 36 to 42 inches — take 42. The 12 ft walls allow up to 108 in of span, so the room is not the constraint here.

What size ceiling fan for a 15x20 room?

300 sq ft falls in the ENERGY STAR 225–400 band: 50 to 54 inches. The 15 ft short wall allows up to 144 in, so take the top of the band.

How long a downrod do I need for a 10 foot ceiling?

Using Hunter's formula with an 8 ft hanging height: 120 − fan height − 96. With a typical 8 to 12 in housing that is a 12 to 16 in downrod, and most people fit 12 in. Check your fan's stated housing height before ordering — it is the number that moves the answer.

Can I put a ceiling fan on an 8 foot ceiling?

Yes, but only a flush or hugger mount. There is no room for a downrod once you allow for the housing and the 7 ft minimum clearance ENERGY STAR asks for. ENERGY STAR notes hugger fans move less air than a fan hung on a rod, because the blades sit closer to the ceiling.

Is a bigger fan always better?

No. ENERGY STAR's bands are diameters matched to floor area, and going over the band puts the blade tips close to the walls, which is noisy and pushes air down the walls instead of through the room. Airflow also depends on motor and blade pitch, so a well-made 44 in fan can outmove a cheap 54 in one.

Do I need two fans?

Over 400 sq ft, yes. The ENERGY STAR chart stops there, and rather than invent a bigger band we would rather say what the standard says: two fans spaced along the length of a large room move air across the whole floor, where one oversized fan makes a windy patch under it and leaves the ends still.

What about a sloped or vaulted ceiling?

Hunter's threshold is 32 degrees: below that the standard bracket works, above it you need an angled mount adapter. Either way measure the ceiling height at the spot the fan will hang, and expect a longer downrod than a flat ceiling of the same nominal height.
